  • Abstract:
The construction industry in India is an emerging and developing industry that has made an incredible contribution to economic growth. Researchers have recognized that the usage of information and communication technology (ICT) technique, particularly e-business in supply chain management (SCM), has gained considerable importance in construction industries to achieve competitiveness and development. Hence, e-business has become a significant component for sustainable growth in construction industry. Several research on SCM related to ICT and e-business were studied in the past. Majority of studies were dealt with a few features of SCM, its strategies, tools and techniques but not with e-business enablers and management initiatives. Moreover, studies on the impact of e-business adoption in SCM were also not found in Indian construction industry. Hence, the current study is aimed to determine e-business adoption for construction companies in Kerala, India. This study also attempted to identify the influence of supply chain (SC) drivers, e-business enablers and the mediating role of management initiatives for SCM performance. From an extensive literature review a conceptual framework was modulated and hypotheses were framed. A response of 240 samples were obtained from four districts through questionnaire using purposive sampling method. From the analysis, it was observed that majority of the respondents are small-sized construction companies comprising of building work contractors using e-business system for 1 to 5 years. The research also measured the extent of e-business adoption in construction companies and found that companies have modest level of use, awareness and benefits on e-business systems. Furthermore, it was found that large companies are aware of e-business and using it for construction activities. The study also observed that the dimensions of e-business enablers, SC drivers and management initiatives have a positive relationship with SCM performance. Interestingly, it was identified that management initiatives mediated the relationship among e-business enablers, SC drivers and SCM performance. The outcome of the study is expected to help the construction companies for better usage of e-business system. It is suggested that the employees need to be given adequate awareness and training program.
